Introduction to a Nerdy Psych Major

Introduction to a Nerdy Psych Major

Hello! My name is Caitlyn Carr. I am majoring in Psychology with a minor in MIS and plan to graduate this Fall! The coolest thing about my major is that it is very helpful in improving my understanding of other people and myself. With the knowledge it provides me, I can interact with people better and also be more helpful to them when they are feeling stressed or having other issues, since I have learned in-depth about the proper ways to cope with those things. This is all very helpful to me, since I am an introvert with a high amount of anxiety in most cases, especially in social situations.

Hobbies

As for hobbies, I spend most of my free time playing video games. I have played video games since I was old enough to properly hold a controller and have not stopped since then. It was actually my hobby of gaming that allowed me to make the online friends that I went to RTX with this year. If I was not into games to the degree that I am, I would have probably never met those friends that I care dearly for.

Summer Events

I was at OU for most of my summer since I also work here in IT and have for a couple years now, but I did do one exciting thing that I mentioned in a previous blog. I attended a convention called RTX that takes place in Austin, Texas. This year of RTX was even more exciting than normal for me, because I was able to finally meet some of my best friends that I have only known online for several years now. A few of them took planes to Oklahoma City and we all drove down to Austin together. It was an amazing experience being able to meet them, and I hope that we can all spend more time with each other in person sometime soon. Below is a video one of my friends filmed and put together that includes clips from our trip.

  1. Hey Caitlyn! I am majoring in Psychology as well! I have attempted to play video games but have failed miserably. The ones that I have attempted to play seem super fun but for some reason I can't get the hang of it. My brother though, lives and breaths video games. The RTX convention seems like an interesting and unique experience!

  2. Hi Caitlyn! I took the basic intro to psychology class my freshman year and thought it was the coolest thing ever. It's really amazing the way our mind works and I've definitely thought about taking more psych classes because it's fun to learn. I also know the excitement of meeting online friends! I have a few I'm pretty close to that I met up with at a concert one year, and we still stay in touch.

  3. Hello Caitlyn! I see that your majoring in Psychology and about to graduate here soon which is awesome! I'm not a psychology major but i did take psychology sophomore year and I really enjoyed it! Also I love to play video games too and you do get to meet some really great people because of them!

  4. Congratulations on your Fall graduation plans, Caitlyn: that is really exciting! And I think that combination of MIS and psychology is very powerful; as you can guess, I am a fan of the intersection of technology and teaching... and teaching really is just psychology under another name. I used to work for IT also, in-between when I was a professor in the Classics department and when I started teaching full-time online back in 2003. Most of the people I knew from those days back in IT are gone, but a few of them are still around, like Eddie Huebsch, who was working for IT already way back in the day. And how great that you made a video of your Austin adventure. Being able mix video with text is one of my favorite things about blog posts. Thank you for sharing that here! I'll be encouraging people to add videos to their Introductions, but you already have one there. Yay!

  5. Hi Caitlyn!
Congrats on your Graduation in the fall! As for your major, I have never heard that combo before but it seems quite wise to combine the two! I originally entered into college as a psychology major and often find myself wondering what it would be like to still be studying it. I have always had a profound appreciation for psychology and wish I would have made it my minor to go with my PR major! I also loved the video your friend made, seems wildly fun. Good luck on finishing out college and whatever comes your way!!

  6. Hi Caitlyn!
I am also graduating this semester! Both of my roommates are psych majors, so I have been learning little bits from them! It is definitely cool when you can understand why things are happening!
I think it is cool that you finally got to meet your friends this summer and go to Austin!
Good luck this semester and congrats on graduating this fall!

  7. Hi Caitlyn. Congrat for your upcoming graduation.
Psychology is a cool major to work with, and IT also. However, i can't imagine can you handle these two at the same time (IT and Psychology is completely different, at least for me).
Make new friends and travel also are fun thing to do, especially go travelling with your best friend.
Hope you have fun and good luck to your semester!

  8. Hello Caitlyn! I always thought that'd be an interesting perk of being a psychology major. Understanding people in a way that's possibly even deeper than they understand themselves. I'm a philosophy major, so I get a little bit of the same thing but more with all of reality lol. That's cool that you got to go to RTX in Austin. I love Austin, and really, most of Texas. I'm from Oklahoma myself though.

  9. Awesome introduction! Also, I'm glad you got to meet your friends and that you all had an amazing time together! That's one thing that the online world definitely helps with. Without it, we would never meet some of the most important people in our lives. My freshman dorm roommate was only my roommate because we met online! If we hadn't met, I wouldn't be in the RUF/NEKS currently and have some of the best friends in the world! Also, I like that you call yourself an introvert. So many people think it's a bad thing, but without introverts, we would be an entirely different society (and for the worse, in my opinion). One of my favorite TEDTalks ever talks about how introversion is important. You can watch it at https://youtu.be/c0KYU2j0TM4 if you want! It was great to read you introduction and I hope you have a great semester! (and congrats on almost graduating!)

  10. Hey Caitlyn! That's really awesome about being into gaming and meeting a lot of awesome people online! I echo the comments of a couple others here in that I've definitely met some of my friends online as well, and they're some of the best people I could have ever imagined meeting. That's also really neat about studying psychology, it's such an interesting and deep field of study. Good luck with the rest of the semester and graduating!

  11. Hey Caitlyn,
My minor is also MIS which is really cool because you're one of the few people I have encountered with the minor of MIS. Psychology is a very interesting subject because its so complex but kind of boils down into simple reasoning (If that makes sense). I find it cool that you also love video games, what kind of games do you play? I have heard of RTX because of a friend's cousin and finding out that you went is pretty cool, Im glad you and your friends were able to have fun at the event. I hope you are having a great semester and Congrats on graduating in the Fall!

  12. Hi Caitlyn! I am also a psychology major and I enjoy it for the reasons you mentioned as well! Another reason I love it is because my classes have taught me to think critically and to have a high degree of skepticism. I am taking my capstone right now that is quite literally named “Skepticism in the Social Sciences.” I love being a psych major and it is cool to see other people enjoying it as well!
